And this song is simple. The words, the tune; it’s fun to play, fun to sing. It’s simply fun.

Whilst this is sugary sickly sweet, it’s simply true.

And you know it’s true.

So, don’t spend heaps of money. Spend heaps of time with people.
Don’t whinge and moan when standing in a queue. Start a conversation.
Do your Christmas shopping at Vinnies or the Salvos.
Don’t spoil your kids. Show them love. Give them time. Studies declare they value time over things.
But not just kids. We all do.

So keep it simple.

I hope you simply have a simple Christmas.

Pure joy. When I hear this song my heart rejoices. The fact that it’s sung by my niece when she was tiny is one reason. Another is my mother-in-law playing accordion. Yep, good ol’ grandma. Add a delightful glockenspiel, a ridiculously simple yet profound metaphor and it’s a delight to listen to. According to folklore, Imojjen memorised the words though she couldn’t read them. Apparently, her folks repeated the words and she took them to heart. Mrs Weaver remembered those old chords as she dug out her father’s squeezebox. I knew he played it. I never knew she did. He was famous for doing so. She ought to be too. Knowing the background to this song brings more joy. Sometimes one line is all that matters.   “Silent Night” is painful to sing, listen and play. It’s always performed in a drearily slow 6/8 tempo that many artists find difficult to break. As a drummer, I hate this song.   For any musos reading this, here’s musical challenge #1: Create a version of this song in another tempo   And then there’s the big idea of the song. I’ve been at the birth of my two children. That day and night were anything but silent.   I can't even get past the second line.
